The data sgp package provides tools for student growth percentile (SGP) analyses. It consists of a data set sgpData as well as four additional long data sets sgpData_LONG, sgptData_LONG, sgptData_LONG and sgpData_INSTRUCTOR_NUMBER utilized by the package as exemplars for users to set up their own SGP analyses.

The sgpData data set provides students’ assessments from 5 years of testing. The first column, ID, provides a unique student identifier and the next 5 columns, GRADE_2013, GRADE_2014, GRADE_2015, GRADE_2016 and GRADE_2017, provide grade level assessment scores for each year. For each year of data, the sgpData data set also provides the student’s scale score and the student’s mean scale score. The sgpData data set also includes a summary table of student progress and a teacher-level look up table that enables the calculation of teacher level growth projections.

SGPs describe a student’s growth compared to other students with similar prior test scores (their academic peers). The calculations for SGPs are complex, but they allow information about student learning to be shared in terms that are familiar to teachers and parents. The SGP package calculates SGPs for ELA and mathematics for students in grades 4 through 8 and in high school. In addition, the SGP package calculates growth percentiles for science in grades 8, 10, and 12 to provide students and parents with more complete information about their students’ academic progress.
