The Sydney Prize
The Sydney prize is a prestigious award that acknowledges those who work hard toward realizing their dreams. It also serves as a tool to promote science. Those who win this award not only receive financial support, but they can use it to spark interest in science fields like biology and medicine as well as contribute to new technologies that will benefit humanity. The Sydney Prize is awarded in a number of different categories, including the Herald Digital History Prize and the Young People’s History Prize.
The prestigious Sydney Prize for Scholarship was established in 1991 by Phi Beta Kappa to honor the Society’s most distinguished scholar and undergraduate teacher. The winner of the prize is chosen annually for national distinction in one or more of three endeavors: research, undergraduate teaching, and leadership in the cause of liberal arts education. The winner is honored at the Society’s Triennial Council Meeting. The prize includes a monetary award and an engraved medallion. The Society will announce a call for nominations in the Key Reporter, General Newsletter and on social media a year and a half prior to each Triennial Council.
Founded in 1946, the Sidney Hillman Foundation was named for the president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America labor union, an early precursor to Unite Here and Workers United SEIU. The Hillman Foundation is a left-of-center organization that awards monetary prizes for journalism and public service. The foundation has bestowed its name on a number of different journalism accolades, including the New York Times’ investigation of Haiti’s debt and ProPublica’s work explicating corporate greed. The foundation also has awarded the Hillman Prize for Social Justice to journalists who have worked for the common good.
Several prize categories are awarded to writers who have published books in the past year. In addition to the Sidney Hook Memorial Prize for Scholarship, the Foundation awards a yearly prize for fiction written by undergraduate students. The Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize is an annual literary prize for outstanding short stories written by an Australian author on a travel theme. This award is judged by a panel of judges and is determined by the quality of the writing and the overall story.
In addition to its literary awards, the Sydney Prize also offers prizes for various sports and hobbies. For example, the Sydney Prize for Chess is awarded to the top player in each tournament in Australia, as well as the runner-up and top under-18 player. The winners are selected by a panel of judges who are renowned chess players.
The Sydney Prize has been given to the founders of Black Lives Matter, Patrise Cullors, Alicia Garza and Opal Tometi, in recognition of their efforts to advance peace with justice and respect for diversity. It is a prestigious award that is given to those who demonstrate commitment to these principles through action. The prize is a $2000 cash award and a plaque. The winners are also invited to the ceremony in the United States.
